Luggage wheels come in all shapes and sizes. If you are a heavy traveler, you know that traveling can be murder on the wheels of your luggage. This happens all the time, especially if you have older luggage wheels.
Now, luggage wheels come in all shapes, sizes and designs. Depending on the design of the luggage that you have, you can actually use inline skate wheels for luggage wheels. Of course, it’s not an ideal situation. In most cases, this is probably something that you should do if you have run out of other options.
If you are in far away country that is not very developed or doesn’t have a robust supply chain, you might be out of luck as far as getting a replacement for your luggage wheels. If, for whatever reason, you want to hang on to your precious luggage, you might want to find wheel replacements for that piece of luggage. This can be a problem because, as mentioned above, the supply chain and product availability at that particular country might not have such luggage wheel replacements readily available.
What can you do in that situation? How can you cope? Well, the reason why you might want to hang on to your luggage is actually quite straightforward. Maybe it is luggage that is fairly new. In that situation, I can understand where you’re coming from because you paid your hard earned dollars for that item. You spent a lot of money on it, you sacrificed a lot and it would be a shame to just let all that money go by chucking the old luggage and buying a new one. That’s exactly what you’re getting when you replace an item that you bought.
As you probably already know, you maximize the value of the money you’re paying for an item by using the item for a long period of time. People who are looking to retain their luggage by simply replacing wheels instead of getting a new set of luggage are usually thinking along these lines. They’re looking at their luggage as a recent investment and they want to maximize the life of that investment by choosing to repair, instead of replacing. I get all of that.
Another reason why you probably would want to hang on to your luggage is because of it’s sentimental value. It may not look like much, it may be damaged, it may have a lot of years, but it’s been with you to all parts of the world. Maybe you used it for very memorable travels to certain parts of the world, maybe certain things happened to you and you equate those great events with the luggage that you used to get to that place. Whatever your personal reason may be, there’s a lot of sentiment there. There are a lot of emotions tied up to your luggage. Again, I can see where you’re coming from.
Make Sure You Can Replace the Wheels
The first thing that you need to do if you are looking to use inline skate wheels for luggage wheel replacement is to look at how the luggage wheels are designed. This is very important because outside of size, outside of functionality, outside of ease of removal and replacement, you need to pay attention to the design because if the wheels are designed in a certain way, you really have no choice. You have to get new luggage because you cannot use inline skate wheels or rollerblade wheels as replacement for the luggage’s wheels.
There are really no other options in this particular scenario. You need to look at the design. Does it stick out or is it embedded in such a way that it can still be taken out? If any of these situations is true, then you need to move on to the next decision making process.
The next step is to look at the size and design of the wheel itself. Is it roughly the same size as an inline skate wheel? This can be a little bit of a crapshoot because many inline skates come in at different sizes. Some have smaller wheels, others have a little bit larger wheels. The good news is that they fall within a certain range.
So you should ask yourself, does my luggage wheel fall within the range of sizes of typical inline skate wheels? If the wheels turn out to be too big or too small, again, you’re out of luck. Your only option at that point in time is to basically just replace your luggage.
Thanks to the modern miracle of Chinese global manufacturing, you really have a lot of options available to you when it comes to cheap replacement luggage. You might even look at that replacement luggage as disposable. By the time you get to the United States, you can then get your main luggage wheels replaced and then say goodbye or give away your disposable Chinese made luggage. That is completely up to you. But I’m offering that as an option. However, if the size falls within the range of inline skate wheels, then you can replace your luggage wheel using inline skate wheels.
Make Sure You Replace the Luggage Wheel the Same Way as You Would Replace Inline Skate Wheels
The first thing that you need to do is you need to make sure that you have the right equipment. You need some sort of tube like a pen to poke out the bearings and the spacer from your inline skate wheels. You also need to have a screw driver of some type. Maybe it’s an Allen screwdriver, maybe it’s a regular screwdriver or a Philips head screwdriver, it doesn’t really matter. What matters is that the head of the screwdriver matches the head of the screws that you’re going to replace.
It’s also very important to have like a small plastic bag available. Put all the loose parts into the small plastic bag. This goes a long way in preventing any small part from going missing. This is especially true in your situation because you’re stressed.
You probably have a plane to catch and you notice that a luggage wheel needs replacing. You’re probably under a lot of time pressure. These are precisely the situations where it’s too easy to lose small parts. So get that small bag handy. You might even tape that bag or label that bag so you can easily find the right pieces when you need them.
Follow these tips to ensure that your luggage wheel replacement plan using inline skate wheels is smooth, quick and doesn’t involve unnecessary drama.
